BHM – evaluation

Similar to the PREVENT project I aimed to focus a lot more on development extracting shapes and colours to create experimental outcomes using a range of media. After a couple of pages I seemed to get stuck in what else to develop. This is where I think I lacked in research. I needed more research to develop from as most of it was very similar.

Inspired by my Notting Hill research I created a neck/ shoulder piece highly influenced by Athi-Patra Ruga’s work ‘at the end of the rainbow we look back…’. I wanted to have flowers painted in a range of colours reflective of the vibrant carnival, majority gold as gold is expensive and only owned by those with power. Empowerment is what the carnival promotes. Flowers I also see as a loving item, hardly anyone hates flowers and its hard to argue with such beauty. I also added yellow feathers as many costumes present during Notting Hill have this. I am very happy with my final outcome as I like that there are different flowers that range in shape and size represent of the diversity of black history but still have the same roots/origin. Some of the plastic flowers were difficult to sew on especially with the netting, an additional fabric could have been sewn underneath as a type of lining to make this easier. For the netting I chose a pale green colour as not to contrast too much with the colours of the flowers. To improve this further I would add more of these plastic flowers to possibly create a poncho, this would be an improvement as it would be an overwhelming structure just as the carnival is overwhelming with the atmosphere.
