Toile

Following the pattern cutting tasks, I was next asked to create a toile from calico. I have created a toile a few years ago for a project but they did not have darts and the sewing was not straight due to my inexperience. I started by deciding I wanted a zip running down the front of my bodice so did not need to put this along the grainline. After cutting out my bodice shape on the fabric, making sure to leave 1.5cm of seam allowance, I pinned my darts in place. I was worried about this as I have not managed to ever create straight darts but once I began sewing they proved easier then I initially anticipated. Next I sewed the shoulders and sides together and finally ironed them flat.

Next time to challenge myself more I would make a different garment such as a skirt or change the positioning of the darts. I don’t think anything went drastically wrong during the process. The thread bundled up at certain points but that was due to the pins blocking the sewing machine, I quickly noticed the problem however and avoided anymore clumps of thread by removing the pins before they slid under the foot.
