This week consisted of 3 workshops. Paper manipulation, design development and draping.
The paper manipulation task began by cutting out three different shapes, of different size, from a concept board that was created prior the day. With these cut outs we were set a range of aims such as focusing on a particular part of the body or only using one shape etc. From this I learnt to understand the translation between 2D and 3D, how to create volume and that quick sketches are the best way to get ideas onto a page. I enjoyed this workshop as I generated lots of designs, using only 3-4 shapes, in a short space of time.
Next was the design development workshop. This I hoped would be most helpful as I believe my design skills lack an individuality that is essential in the design world. The process was very similar to the paper manipulation, drawing tasks were set and they had to be completed in a short space of time. This I found very challenging as I had not done anything like that before. After a couple of tasks, the required six designs became easier to complete in the 3-5 allocated minutes. Reflecting back on the workshop I found i was able to generate more unique ideas/designs and show the development of my drawings. I found small components such as cuffs and pockets particularly difficult and trousers. To improve on this I need to, and will, practice designing more of these shapes.
Draping I unfortunately was not present for, however will ask my peers to help teach me the basics and then experiment further in my own time.
